Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to add such much-needed steel to his midfield at Old Trafford for next season, with it rumoured this morning that the Portuguese tactician has set his sights firmly on a Chelsea mainstay to partner Paul Pogba at the heart of his side.
The player in question is Blues’ midfield enforcer Nemanja Matic, who proved instrumental throughout the current campaign as Antonio Conte’s side wrapped up a deserved Premier League crown.
Any potential deal between the sides would result in a reunion between Mourinho and Matic, with the Serbian having acted as a key member of the now-United boss’s title win at Chelsea in 2015.
It was in fact Mourinho who brought the midfield powerhouse back to Stamford Bridge the year before, re-signing Matic for £21 million from Benfica.
The Red Devils hierarchy are also said to be keeping tabs on Tottenham’s English international Eric Dier, who comes with the added benefit of being equally adept in both midfield and defence.
However, Mourinho and co. have put any potential bid for the former Sporting Lisbon man on the backburner for the time being, with relations between the club and Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy thought to be on the frosty side.
