Man Utd Midfielder Delighted by 'Special' Honour After Being Named Club's Player of the Year

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera described the honour as ‘special’ when he was presented with the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award at Old Trafford on Thursday night after a real breakout season in a new deeper role.

In an incredibly tight fan vote, Herrera finished just 242 ahead of Antonio Valencia, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in third place, and took his place on stage to offer his thanks.

“It’s very special for me to win this award because when you see the list of winners, you realise how important it is,” Herrera is quoted as saying by

“And I stopped the record of David (de Gea)!” he added, referring to his friend and fellow countryman’s recent dominance after winning in each of the last three seasons.

Already something of a fan favourite prior to 2016/17, Herrera has taken that to new levels over the last nine months in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign in charge and is grateful for the support. As always, though, he isn’t prepared to rest on any laurels and is still striving for perfection.

“I feel it [the fans’ affection] and I’m very thankful but I think a Manchester United player can never stop,” he said. “We have to keep giving them the affection back because you can see we don’t always perform at our best, yet they are always behind us.”

Despite missing out on the main prize, Valencia was honoured with the Player’s Player of the Year award as voted for by his team-mates.

The Ecuadorian international quickly established himself as an automatic pick for Mourinho as far as back as early pre-season and is one of only five United players to have started 40 or more games over the course of the campaign. Team-mates have appreciated his consistency.

“It’s all about working hard. I’m very grateful for the words of the manager, the support of the fans and obviously on this occasion the support of my team-mates. I’m very grateful to all of them, especially Marouane (Fellaini)!” Valencia said.

Having dominated the club’s Goal of the Month contests this season, Henrikh Mkhitaryan won Goal of the Season for his scorpion flick against Sunderland, while rising youngster Axel Tuanzebe, who has started each of United’s last three Premier League games, was named Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year.

Angel Gomes became the youngest ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year trophy after making waves at Under-18 level. At just 16 years and 9 months, the midfield talent is nine months younger than Ryan Giggs when he won it back in 1991.
