Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has offered fans a positive update on his ongoing recovery from an ankle injury suffered in April, with the left-back hoping that he will be able to return to action for the club ‘soon’.

There was confusion over the weekend when manager Jose Mourinho appeared to lump Shaw and Ashley Young in with the more seriously injured Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the former Southampton prodigy should be back in the coming weeks.

“I have been doing rehab each day and it is coming along really well. I haven’t got a timescale but I am feeling really good, working hard and the sooner the better. Hopefully it is soon,” he told ManUtd.com.

“I have been running on the treadmill, doing my leg weights, making sure my foot is strong, a lot of cardio work to keep me in good shape. I am feeling really good. Watching the [LA Galaxy] game, I miss it and I want to be back out there as soon as possible and stay out on the pitch.”

Shaw endured another tough campaign in 2016/17. He finally returned from the broken leg that had wrecked his promising start to the season before, but encountered numerous fitness difficulties that left many even questioning his future at Old Trafford.

“I don’t want to be too hard, but I think sometimes I am unfortunate with the injuries and especially with my leg. But I don’t want to look back at that. This injury I have is an unfortunate one, but that is in the past now. I need to keep fit and I feel that this season I will,” the player continued.

Shaw became the most expensive teenager in the world when he first joined United in 2014, but having celebrated his 22nd birthday last week, he is yet to live up to that billing. The potential has been obvious, though, and he hopes the upcoming campaign will finally be his time to shine.

“I feel this is my season to prove myself and I am feeling in good shape. In myself I feel confident. I want to show everyone that I believe in myself and show the manager that he can believe in me,” he said.

Like Rojo and Young, Shaw is part of the current United tour squad, despite not be ready to play, as Mourinho looks to keep him and the others involved as much as possible.
