Manchester United progressed into the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night, seeing off Belgian side Anderlecht 3-2 on aggregate after a moment of brilliant composure from Marcus Rashford.
A number of fans after the game – once they’d recovered from the tense 120 minutes, Paul Pogba’s blinding brilliance and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s…well, Zlatan Ibrahimovic – wondered why manager Jose Mourinho had gone over to the away fans to applaud them at full time.
The video from Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur (@HLNinEngeland) shows the Portuguese doing so.

Was it a patronising gesture? Did he want to rub this late victory in the faces of the Anderlecht fans? Thankfully, neither was true, with the Portuguese simply feeling that the away fans had outdone themselves and did a great job “pushing their team forward”.

Having dispatched Anderlecht, Manchester United can look forward to a semi-final clash against Spanish team Celta Vigo – although they look like being without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with reports ruling him out of the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained at Old Trafford on Thursday.
