Liverpool fans in Baghdad have been speaking about how they support and watch their team every time the games are on TV.
Dr Ali Muthanna is a lifelong Liverpool fan and a member of the the Liverpool Fans Association of Iraq and posted this video online of loads of the Liverpool fans singing and going wild:
Dr Ali Muthanna has also managed to watch quite a lot of games at Anfield itself when he has been on business meetings to the UK. The avid Liverpool supporter spoke to the Echo about them being fans of the Reds:
“My colleague and I have been fans since about 1977.
“Football is really popular in Iraq. Our Liverpool Fans Association has over 5,000 members.
“Liverpool fans all gather at a local cafe, usually 300-400 or so come and watch the match.
“I visit the UK every six weeks or so, and I try and get in a visit to Anfield when I can, but sometimes I go and see the away games too.”
Dr Ali Muthanna also spoke about how football is growing in Iraq, but many of the younger generation are growing up to support Spanish giants Real Madrid:
“A lot of the younger Iraqi people support teams like Real Madrid, but whenever I come over to England I make sure to bring back some Liverpool shirts for the youngsters so I’ve managed to convert a few of them.”
