Former Manchester United star Mikael Silvestre has said that Luke Shaw must react positively to criticism from Jose Mourinho if he is to succeed at the club.

The former Southampton left-back has endured a tough time at the club since the Portuguese manager took over and the Englishman seems to have struggled to fully recover from a broken leg he picked up last season.

Shaw was injured in a clash with PSV’s Hector Moreno in the Europa League which saw him sidelined for a prolonged period and Mourinho has since called him out for his poor mindset, fitness and work ethic.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: “It is tough. It is a test of character.

“If you react well then you will bounce back and get back into the team. He doesn’t appear to me to be a player who will give up easily. I hope he doesn’t give in and I don’t expect him to.

“I understand what he is going through. But he is not the only one and he has to realise that. I know people are pointing the finger at him and making a big thing of what the manager has been saying but Anthony Martial is facing similar questions from the manager from time to time. Marcus Rashford has faced it. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has faced it.

“He is not the only one. It is not that you have been singled out.

“If Jose Mourinho’s first words are in private and then he goes public, it is fine. It is the other way around when it is difficult to take. You don’t want to hear it first in public. You get taken by surprise, you read the newspapers or your friends and family call you and say they’ve read it or heard it and the manager is saying this and that about you.

“But the players are not complaining so I am sure the manager has handled it in the right way.

“Luke has been unlucky with his injury last season. You need some luck in life to succeed. But everything is behind him now. He should now have a stronger mind set because he has had to overcome a lot of difficulties. It is a test of character. But there should only be positives ahead for him now.”

Matteo Darmian has started the last two games at left-back for United and it remains to be seen whether Shaw will stay at the club this summer.
